The assassin R9X was launched from an MQ-9 Predator drone to kill Zawahiri. This drone can fly up to 6000 nautical miles for 27 hours continuously at an altitude of 50000 feet with a payload of about 1700 kg. How the CIA identified and killed Zawahiri

Before the release of the Pentagon statement, there were rumors that Zawahiri might be stationed in various mountainous areas of Pakistan or Afghanistan. Zawahiri went into hiding for many years. The mission to kill him was carried out with great patience and concentration by the CIA. For years the US government had been tracing a network linked to Zawahiri. After their humiliating defeat in Afghanistan last year, they were monitoring Al Qaeda's presence in Afghanistan.

He ended up on the United States and Britain's most wanted lists for bombing the United States embassies in several locations. In 2004, he was appointed deputy to Osama bin Laden.
